WTEF Honors

  • For 12 consecutive years, 100% of seniors graduating from WTEF’s college preparatory program, Center for Excellence, have gained admission to college on an academic or athletic scholarship or with a financial aid package.
  • In 2009, Executive Director Eleni Rossides was one of three winners of the Gelman, Rosenberg & Freedman EXCEL Award, recognizing and honoring outstanding nonprofit leaders. Candidates must show excellence in the areas of innovation, motivation, community building, ethical integrity and strategic leadership.
  • In 2008, WTEF was named The Washington Post Award Winner for Excellence in Nonprofit Management. The award was made in recognition of WTEF’s programs and its “outstanding board involvement, diversified fundraising practices, effective use of employees and volunteers, and sound financial management practices.” This award emphasizes management practices, fiscal responsibility, planning, accountability, and program evaluation.
  • In 2007, WTEF was named one of five finalists for the "Washington Post Excellence in Nonprofit Management Award."
  • In 2007, WTEF was chosen for inclusion in the selective DC Catalogue for Philanthropy. Selection was made on the basis of distinction, merit, cost-effectiveness, and accomplishments. Catalogue reviewers and staff stated that WTEF “is one of the finest smaller charities Greater Washington has to offer!”
  • In 2006, WTEF Executive Director, Eleni Rossides, was featured in the Washingtonian magazine, “Serving Up Winners.”

  • In 2006 and 2003, the USTA awarded WTEF the National Junior Tennis League Chapter of the Year award
  • In 2005, the USTA Mid-Atlantic Section selected the Arthur Ashe Children’s Program to receive its Community Program of the Year award.

  • In 2000, the USTA named WTEF, Organization of the Year, marking the first time the USTA recognized an organization with the dual objectives of providing tennis and education.

  • WTEF has been recognized as one of the top Community Tennis Associations in the country by the USTA and Tennis Week Magazine.

  • In 1998, Willis Thomas, WTEF Program Director, was featured on NBC-TV during Black History Month as a community leader who has made a difference in the lives of at-risk children by encouraging them to choose sports and academics over risky behavior on the streets.

  • In 2005, Mr. Thomas was named a WETA “Hometown Hero.”

  • In 2004, Mr. Thomas was named President of the American Tennis Association.

  • In 2001, Mr. Thomas was named a “Washingtonian of the Year” by the Washingtonian magazine.
