Honoree Bios


Patrick McEnroe

Patrick McEnroe is the 38th U.S. Davis Cup captain and he competed for the Davis Cup in 1993, 1994 and 1996. Patrick played on the ATP tour for nine years, posting a career-high singles ranking of No. 29 in 1995. He reached the semifinals of the Australian Open in 1991 and the quarterfinals of the US Open in 1995. He won the ATP singles title in Sydney in 1995 and 16 ATP doubles titles, including the 1989 French Open.  Patrick retired from professional tennis in 1998.  He now serves as President of the Board of Directors of the USTA Tennis & Education Foundation and previously served on the USTA board for two years.  Patrick also works as a commentator for CBS Sports and ESPN, in addition to being a partial owner for the New York Sportimes of World TeamTennis.

Donald Dell

No history of professional sports could be complete without a chapter devoted to the contributions of ProServ Founder and Chairman, and Clear Channel Senior Vice President, Donald L. Dell.  ProServ’s success led to its being acquired in 1999 by SFX and he serves as Group President of SFX Media and Events.  He currently oversees and distributes many of SFX and SFX Television’s properties including the French Open, The U.S. Open, the Legg Mason Tennis Classic, the Boston Marathon and 30 ATP tennis telecasts on FOX Sports Net. Dell currently serves as the Vice Chairman of the International Tennis Hall of Fame.  He is a founding member of the Board of Directors of the Arthur Ashe Institute of Urban Health, and serves as an adjunct professor at the University of Virginia Law School.

Raymond A. "Chip" Mason

Raymond A. Mason founded Mason and Company in 1962 and has spent his career building the financial services organization Legg Mason, Inc.  He serves as chairman of the board and chief executive officer of Legg Mason, Inc., an asset management company with more than $900 billion under management.  Legg Mason, Inc. is now among the largest asset management firms in the world.

Mr. Mason's civic interests are many.  He currently serves as chairman of the Johns Hopkins University's board of trustees; he is also a trustee and member of the executive committee of Johns Hopkins Medicine.  Since 1995, he has chaired the Maryland Business Roundtable for Education.

Mr. Mason graduated from the College of William and Mary with a Bachelor's degree in economics.  He has served as chairman of the Securities Industry Association, the NASD, Greater Baltimore Committee and United Way of Central Maryland.
